Said to have been created by amateur taxidermist Douglas Herrick, the mythical critter
is legendary in this area. While some folks think that the horned rabbit is a hoax,
some camping cowboys have reported hearing jackalopes singing along with their campfire
songs. You can be the judge as to whether or not this species of rabbit is fact
or fiction!

Although heavily disputed, the creation of the hamburger is claimed by the owner of Louis’ Lunch in New Haven. Unsure what to do with leftover scrap meat, Louis Lassen ground it up and put it between two pieces of bread, and as a result America’s favorite sandwich was born.

Athens, Texas
Old West Luncheonette owner Fletcher Davis a.k.a. Old Dave, who was described as innovative with his recipes, allegedly also created a very greasy version of the hamburger around the turn of the century. Old Dave’s hamburger became such a hit that the town pulled enough money together to enter it into the World’s Fair. It is believed that Fletcher Davis even created our favorite burger accompaniment, french fries.

What was a frustrating setback for Erie County Fair vendors turned into a favorite treat for the world! Brothers Frank and Charles Menches were sausage sandwich vendors at a county fair held in Hamburg, New York, who were sent large quantities of ground beef instead of pork! Unable to make their sausage, they seasoned and fried up the beef in patties creating a blessing in disguise for us to enjoy in years to come.

Rocanville Saskatchewan, Canada
During a time when the world was industrializing and oil was a necessity for many jobs, Ernie Symons thought it was the perfect time to patent and produce “the best oil can in the world.” Upon settling on Rocanville, Symons began mass-producing his oil can design, which was heavily demanded for the next 50 years. To honor his fiftieth year of production, The Chamber of Commerce constructed a giant oil can to recognize the work that Symons did for industry, thus making the town the Oil Can Capital of the World.

Looking for a more efficient way to gather “black gold,” Edwin Drake of Seneca Oil Company invented a steam-engine rig to drill many feet into the earth and produce oil. His new creation yielded five-times more oil than the traditional “skimming” process, and was used well into the modern age.
